Main problems: 1. What was the trend of the current account balance in the 90s and is its level a threat to our economy? 2. Is a negative current account balance characteristic only for less economically developed countries? 3. How could this deficit be financed and what is its macroeconomic environment? 4. Is a deficit in the current account always accompanied by the state budget deficit? 5. Should the policy of deficit of the current account be continued in perspective of the Polish pursue of membership in the structures of the European Union? 6. Is excessive real appreciation of the zloty a main cause of the deficit? 7. What are the forecasts of the financial institutions concerning tendencies in the basic macroeconomic variables in the years to come and how will the governmental policy related to external relations with abroad influence a general situation in our country? The above problems should be discussed with reference to the analysis of Polish fulfilment of so-called convergence criteria stipulated by the Maastricht Treaty. In these circumstances the issue of comparability of data describing the level of adjustment of the Polish economy to the EU requirements appears. It results from fundamental differences in the method of defining selected variables. One should note that the methodology as to calculation of the current account deficit to GNP ratio acquired by Poland has enabled to obtain better results in comparison to the EU.
